550 x People attended 'More 4 Me' Premiere Success at the Piccadilly Cinema last night!!

The night was attended by media and hundreds of keen movie-goers despite an earlier police scare regarding a suspicious package in the Perth CBD area, Western Australia.

The police opened up the cinema at 6pm right on schedule and the first of two screenings on the night proceeded 50 minutes later giving people a chance to settle into the cinema.

Assembly Cut almost complete

Update ...

The Assembly Cut of More 4 Me is almost complete.

What this means is that the majority of the 70-80 hours of high definition footage has been worked through so that hundreds and hundreds of clips have been selected that may end up in the final film.

This will soon be whittled down into the Rough Cut which will look more like the length of the final film - 90-100 minutes.

Time Lapse Sequence

At the moment I'm editing a cool sequence about time and how we spend it.

I've got some brilliant shots of masses of people commuting in London train stations and also across one of the largest crosswalk intersections in the world at Shibuya, Tokyo. There must be one thousand people on this crosswalk at one time.

This cut with shots of old ladies carrying piles of wood across the Equator in Kenya makes for an interesting montage.

I'm using some speed control techniques for effect. It really gives the feel of the throb of the city.

Editing Update

The Post-Production stage of “More 4 Me” is steadily progressing. A rough cut sequence is being edited together as we journey to various places around the world and look at various things that people have said they can’t live without.

To help with the editing process we have been very grateful to the volunteered efforts of Adeliene Wong and Samantha Hinsbey who are diligently logging the dialogue of people we interviewed across 7 countries. All in all there were something like 170-180 people interviewed. Thank you Adeliene and Samantha!

David Davoll is beavering away on animations that will quickly visually explain concepts throughout the film.

Ray Shaw has been brought into the team in the capacity of Sound Engineer/ Mixer to work with the live audio from the various locations and lay down the final sound mix which will later be completed by Michael Allen’s musical score.

Composer: Things Of Stone And Wood

Creation Box Films would like to announce it has named Michael Allen as the musical composer for More 4 Me.

Michael was part of the Australian band Things of Stone and Wood, known for their hits "Happy Birthday Helen" and "Share This Wine". The band released 5 albums with Sony Records and Shock Records in the 1990's.

Michael is based in Melbourne and has just released his third solo album, Stargazer.

He brings a wealth of experience to the project having spent the past 7 years writing music for the moving picture including work for television.

The Terminal

In addition to the photos I better tell you something of the trip itself.

Well it started off nearly disastrously. Our 10:35pm Tiger Airways flight (note company name) was delayed till 1am at which time they promptly cancelled the flight and herded us back through customs as if we’d actually left the country. Of course we hadn’t and any such thoughts were just dreams we’d had whilst falling asleep waiting for our flight.

Standing in The Terminal – not too dissimilar from the Tom Hanks film by the same name except for the 200 other marooned passengers around us – we waited for a sign of life or hope from the dutiful airline carrier. Beat. Nothing.

Knowing we had to be in Siem Reap, Cambodia to start shooting that morning, I headed for the Singapore Airlines desk and bought two (much more expensive) tickets to Singapore. This flight left in a couple of hours (at 3am). We were out of there. Phew!

At Changi Airport (Singapore) I was faced with a similarly huge cost for flying the remaining hour or so to Cambodia. But I was already committed, so out came the credit card again. Whack – ouch!

When we touched down in Cambodia and ran across the tarmac to the thatch-covered arrival terminal we were only 4.5 hours behind schedule, but unfortunately it had cost me an extra $2600.

I’ve never got through customs so quick. Suddenly we were zooming through the streets of Siem Reap on a tuk tuk. The camera was out and filming had begun…

In 3 days we leave for Cambodia for the last 'on-road' film shoot for More 4 Me:

Here's a quick run down of our itinerary:

Sat 12th Jan – leave for Cambodia via Singapore.

Sun 13th Jan – arrive in Siem Reap (Cambodia) and visit Angkor Wat and the Angkor Temples (Ta Prohm pictured).

Mon 14th Jan – travel on bus from Siem Reap to Phnom Penh (capital of Camb) and visit the Killing Fields and the Royal Palace.

Tues 15th –17th Jan – Operation Christmas Child shoebox distribution to children in villages around Phnom Penh with Samaritan's Purse.

Thurs 17th Jan – arrive in Singapore late at night.

Fri 18th Jan – film shoot on Orchard Road and Raffles Hotel before departing for Perth in the afternoon.

Journey Across Kenya

On our way to the Rehema Orphanage in remote western Kenya we crossed the Equator, looked out over mist covering at the Great Rift Valley and drove for about 10 and half hours on the worst roads (or series of potholes) I have ever seen.

As I was filming out of the front window and we were approaching the first of about 10 barbed roadblocks set up by AK-47 wielding police officers, our Ugandan drivers Derrick and Henry warned us about how the Kenyan police don't take too kindly to being filmed.

Muttered stories reached my ears of people having been locked up and I remember letting our camera slide down between my legs as an officer stared in through my passenger-side window. "Don't look down, don't look down!", I remember thinking. He didn't and we were let through.

Cambodia flights are booked

The flights to Cambodia are now booked.

Andrew Hooper and I leave on Sat 12th Jan 2008 for Siam Reap (city to the north of Cambodia close to the Thai border) via Singapore.

Over the next 2 days we'll film at Angkor Wat (the ancient temple) and make our way south to the Cambodian capital Phnom Penh.

There we'll join up with Marina Prior and the team from Samaritan's Purse and begin the shoebox distribution in the surrounding villages.

On the way back we'll spend the night in Singapore before arriving back in Perth late on the night of Fri 18th Jan.

Bar 138 Film Screening

Last night was "In the Can" which screened 7 films at Barrack Street's Bar 138 one of which was my film "Another Chance".

A relatively good crowd turned out for it to take in the films in the balmy air of the semi-outdoor bar.

I'm happy to say we raised $347 including those who offered donations because they couldn't make it. This will really help with our trip to Cambodia on 12th Jan.

Kenyan Welcome

It was 10:30pm and the air was hot and muggy.

We'd just arrived at Nairobi Airport to a warm welcome by our Kenyan host Dr Francis Ndungu. This was my second time in Africa, but my first time in Kenya. As we drove up to a vantage point overlooking the city I noticed the streets were fairly empty (something which would rarely be the case). Through a mask of barbwire we looked across at the haze covering the sleeping metropolis.

Some places were open including the American-style burger joint that was next on Francis' list. To my surprise, it was no cheaper than its western cousins.

Over that burger we learnt more about Francis who was turning out to be a walking paradox. A highly intelligent man at the top of his field of dentistry, who has lost count how many times he has played golf with the president and yet choses to spend his wealth on building up the nearby slums of Marurui.

The vast gap between 'the haves and the have-nots' was starting to open up before our eyes as we entered Ridgeways and Runda, two of the most expensive suburbs in Nairobi. Franics lives with his family in the latter, although he has given much of his posessions to the poor. He lives on the cutting edge between two worlds.

We would go to the slums on our return to Nairobi, but for now it was time to crash under mosquito nets as tomorrow we would embark on a 10 hour road journey to an orphanage in the distant western provinces of Kenya ...

The Chicken Ultimatum

Andrew ponders which part of London's Waterloo Station they used to film Matt Damon in, in The Bourne Ultimatum.

Not really - Andrew just likes posing with unpredictable expressions.

The somewhat larger Bourne crew was there only months before us. Of course we left a greater impact on the station having to endure several impromptu star signings.

Our ultimatum = will it be chicken caesar sandwiches for lunch or tandoori chicken sandwiches.?

It was from here that we took the train to Epsom for a more rural view on what the English think...

Interview: Marina Prior at His Majesty's

Yesterday I had the pleasure of interviewing the leading lady of Australian musicals, Marina Prior. Many thanks to His Majesty's Theatre (where we filmed) and to Samaritan's Purse who set up the interview.

We chatted with Marina for about an hour and covered the topics of her musical career, the work she has seen Samaritan's Purse doing in Cambodia and her views on what is important to her in life.

One thing that really came across to me is how grounded and balanced she is and how she hasn't let success change her priorities.

This interview will edit in nicely with the footage we shoot when we travel to Cambodia with Marina in January...

Dress Circle Bar

The location was the Dress Circle Bar which was quite spacious so we were able to frame Marina next to the grand piano and set a back light against the red curtain to create some depth and contrast.

Because HDV (High Definition) is so well-equipped to handle low-lighting conditions we found we needed to bounce the 500W Rifa light off the ceiling as to not 'blow-out' the shot.

This and a combination of gels on the key, fill and back lights allowed us to keep the lighting soft for the look we wanted.

London Interviews

My approach in Perth was to get people to sign our written consent form at the start of the interview, but standing on Oxford Street getting knocked down by a sea of people made me change tack to putting the camera in their face, building a rapport and getting them to sign afterwards.

At first I thought we were going to be having many more shorter interviews that were 5-10 mins maximum in length. That all changed after lunch on the first day when we met a Personal Assistant to one of the top fashion houses in London. One of his first sentences was "People say it is like The Devil Wears Prada ... and its true ... its true".

The next half hour ensued the most fascinating conversation about the inside of the fashion industry. It was at that point that I realised we were going to have a much more interesting film if we had more in depth conversations with fewer people.

In London we were able to interview someone working for a tailor on Savile Row, a Big Issue seller doing it rough, several people in the financial arena, a street sweeper in Leadenhall Market, a couple selling property who lived in Mayfair and a group of three barmen from a West End cocktail bar just to name a few.

The First Day

Our time in London was in some ways the toughest part of the shoot. Andrew and I had to really hit the ground running...

We shot till about 10:30pm on the first night despite having to dodge showers and shoot under shelters in a rainy Soho.

I must say although I wasn't excited about the rain - it does create a nice glistening effect on Leicester Square and the cobbled streets of the theatre district.

This shot is a little way from there though. Any guesses?

Marina Prior Interview

Exciting news is we're interviewing Marina Prior for the film More 4 Me. This has been set up by Samaritan's Purse, who we are travelling to Cambodia with in January.

We'll interview Marina on Mon 12th November and to set the scene for our chat with Australia's leading lady of the stage, I've arranged to use the location of Perth's His Majesty's Theatre.

Marina has had leading roles in many musicals throughout the years including Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables and Cats. More recently she has appeared as a panel judge for the TV show, It Takes Two.

As an ambassador for Samaritan's Purse she has travelled to Cambodia before to volunteer her time on the shoebox distribution of Operation Christmas Child.

Marina may be travelling with us this time so we can film her on location, however she has also just landed the lead role in Guys and Dolls on the east coast and it remains uncertain at this stage, as to whether she be able to make the trip. More on that soon ...

London

By the time I met up with Andrew at Baker Street Tube on the first morning of our 3 day shoot I'd already spent 6 days in London with Natasha and Jasmine.

So by this stage I was really hitting my straps in remembering every nook and cranny of this great city which we lived in for 2 years back in 1999-2001. This would all come in very handy.

Armed with a ridiculously heavy backpack full of audio equipment, tapes and cables I waved goodbye to my family as they set off for an adventure of their own around England (with Natasha's parents) and I marched off for 3 of the most full-on weeks of my life.

Once Andrew and I had checked in our gear at our hotel we hit Oxford Street ... or should I say it hit us.

Pirates of the Caribbean 3

One hundred and eleven people attended our "Pirates of the Caribbean 3" movie fundraiser night last Thursday (31st May) at the Astor Cinema, Mt Lawley.

The "More 4 Me" trailer was screened beforehand and lucky seat prizes were given out courtesy of FlightWorld American Express.

Street Interviews

The first set of street interviews occurred on the Hay Street and Murray Street Malls.

Apart from beginning to accumulate the footage we'll be using in the final cut, this shoot also served as a great way to test the interview technique we're using for the story and the technical aspects.

In the space of 3 hours we interviewed 15 people and shot 35 mins of footage. Knowing these ratios we're able to better plan our overseas shoot which we embark on in 7 weeks time

Andrew is leaving first (in 2 weeks) to shoot his own documentary film in Russia. I leave on 20th July and we'll both meet up in London where filming will continue and the UK section will begin.

Shooting Begins

Production has begun on the documentary "More 4 Me".

On Saturday 26th May, Andrew Hooper (Cameraman - pictured) and I took to the streets of Perth to begin the first day's shoot.

As pictured, we're using a Sony HDV (High Definition Digital) camera (model HDR FX1E) for production.

For those technically minded this will allow us to record with a resolution of 1080 lines interlaced on a 3 chip camera in 16:9 widescreen.

Quiz Night Success

The Quiz Night Fundraiser was a success on many levels.

Twenty three tables of eight almost filled the auditorium and I keep hearing reports back from people as to how much fun they had.

We played a clip from a movie every round and then asked questions about it. Most of the time all you needed to be doing was watching closely.

On the fundraising front we made cleared over $3000 with some still coming by way of donation.

One of the highlights was when the 2006 AFL Premiership T-Shirt kindly donated by Sports Fever, Subiaco and signed by West Coast Eagle Mark Seaby was auctioned off for $150.

Many thanks to my wife Natasha who helped so much in preparing the night, plus Andrew, David, Patsy, Jo, Lisa, Jarrod, Shirley, Jean-Michel and Providence who helped on the night.

Dr Nyungu from Nairboi, Kenya

I was at a breakfast the other day where I happened to be sitting next to the guest speaker - Dr Nyungu from Nairobi, Kenya (pictured). He was speaking about the work being done in the slums of Marurui (in Nairobi).

After the breakfast he was playing with my daughter Jasmine, and he jokingly said I'll need to bring her to Nairobi when she grows up. When I told him I'm coming in July (for More 4 Me), he practically asked me to visit the slums at Marurui for the film.

I think this will be a great asset to the film in terms of depth and scope of what we are going to capture in Kenya. He gave me his card and I am contacting him...

700 people watch "More 4 Me" trailer

On Sunday I was interviewed at my church at 3 separate services about More 4 Me. Throughout the day I must have spoken in front of about 700 people. Mildy nerve-wracking, but I had confidence in what God was going to do with me and the situation.

They interviewed me about Another Chance, and then screened it. Following that they interviewed me about More 4 Me, where I was able to unleash the vision of it to a captive audience - a very powerful opportunity. The 15-20 segment finished off with them showing the 2 min trailer for More 4 Me.

I got a lot of positive feedback. Many people came up and said they loved the idea.

One response in particular stood out. A lady which I'd met some time before but hadn't spoken to for at least a year, came up and said - I've just come back from the Oscars and I know the people who made Happy Feet. If you want I can introduce you to them.

Yes please! I'll be calling her shortly.

Animator/ Visual Effects - David Davoll

David Davoll who worked with Lincoln Fenner on "Another Chance" and "21st Century Men" will be heading up the Animation and Visual Effects on "More 4 Me".

The Creation Box Films logo (designed by Carson Pullyblank of Formula Design) was brought to life by David back in 2005 when he animated the butterflies bursting out of the box.

David will be creating the animations required to visually demonstrate the message of "More 4 Me".

Cinematographer Onboard - Andrew Hooper

"More 4 Me" now has a confirmed Cinematographer Andrew Hooper.

He'll be travelling with Director/ Producer Lincoln Fenner to London, Kenya, New York, Los Angeles and Tokyo in July/ August 2007.

Andrew and Lincoln have worked together before on Video Lives, 21st Century Men and Another Chance.

Andrew will be shooting on his Sony HDV HVR-FX1E digital camera.

Received Letter from Franklin Graham

I've now received a letter from the President of Samaritan's Purse, Franklin Graham (based in North Carolina) in regards to "More 4 Me".

I've requested that they allow us to film and tour with their Operation Christmas Child shoebox gift distribution program through Cambodia. The next one will be happening in Jan 2008.

Franklin tells me that he's sure something will be able to be worked out and that he's passing the matter on to his Vice President Jim Harrelson.

Things are starting to move!

Australian Film Commission - Funding Application

I've been offline for a little while but that has been because so much has been happening with this project. There have been quite a few developments which I'll mention over the next few blogs.

The first one to mention is we've now applied for funding with the Australian Film Commission. Collating all the information they needed in terms of forms, documentation, spreadsheets, budgets, quotes and letters of expression of interest became a mini-project in itself.

However, it was a valuable exercise to do at this point in the game as it turned the wheels and tightened the project in a way that wouldn't have otherwise happened till further down the track when it was less useful for planning.

Right now we have a finely tuned project that is in pre-production and still months away from the first major shoot.

Filming at the Orphanage

Great news! I've received an email from Neil McDonald (Called2Kenya Minsitries) allowing us (myself and my Cinematographer) to film the children at the Rehema Orphanage in Kenya.

Neil has also invited us to stay at his house, nearby to the orphanage and is even arranging for us to be picked up from the airport.

This kind of willingness is greatly appreciated and at the end of the day is critical to the realisation of this film.

Kenya - Rehema Orphanage

One hundred and thirty nine children call the Rehema Orphanage in Kenya home. This is another place we are planning to visit when we shoot "more 4 me".

It is located in Nandolia Village near Bungoma, in the Western Province. Rehema means "mercy" in Swahili.

It was founded in 2000 by the members of Bukholi Baptist Church under Mission Link Ministries of Kenya, led by Reverend Edwin Wanyama. The orphanage moved to the present 6 acre site in 2003.

These children either have no parents or one deceased parent and the remaining parent cannot afford to feed them. This situation is mainly the result of the AIDS pandemic and other diseases which take the lives of the parents.

Samaritan's Purse

I've now written to Franklin Graham (President of Samaritan's Purse) asking to tour on the Operation Christmas Child through Cambodia.

At first I thought these shoebox distributions happened in November, but I'm learning that Cambodia has its distribution in Jan and early Feb. Also there are three of them and they are for 9 or 10 days each.

I was first moved to this project when I saw an Operation Christmas Child DVD in Sept 2006. It was sent by my mother Judith Anne Tahir who is involved with Samaritan's Purse in Tasmania.

The reactions of the children receiving simple gifts in a wrapped shoebox were truly amazing.

This blog is about a new feature length documentary entitled "more 4 me".

Travelling across the globe, the team from Creation Box Films, headed by Director/ Producer Lincoln Fenner are planning to shoot this doco in late 2007.

75% of the profits will be donated to a handful of carefully chosen charity/ aid organisations. To make the movie Creation Box Films will be providing part of the funding and will also be looking to funding bodies and funding events to raise the remainder.
